Berends was born in the Netherlands but lives and works in Curaçao for a large part of the year. Her work has won multiple awards and has hung in various museums and galleries at home and abroad, including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Kröller-Müller Museum. The portrait she painted of King Willem-Alexander was used by the Royal Dutch Mint for a national campaign and for the postal company in Curaçao she designed a series of stamps with the theme ‘Curaçao Beach Scenes’. The series ‘Beach Life’ by Bianca Berends depicts the carelessness that a beach day brings. Her fascination with the play of light and shadow, in combination with pronounced use of colour and painting stroke, results in ‘Feel Good Art’. The sun and sea make everyday problems forget. Children are often central to her work; their purity is expressed even more on the beach. The work arouses nostalgia for times gone by and revives memories.
