Edith Madou (1964) begins her artistic journey at the academy for art in Maastricht, after which she also followed a training ‘teacher crafts’ at Fontys. She soon followed several courses in which she mastered the different techniques needed to make versatile ceramics. Edith started making fish from ceramics. The elusive, fast, glittering animal made of clay, immortalized in stone. Motionless, yet vital, almost a real fish. Now, more than fifteen years later, her great source of inspiration is still the sea; and still makes them fish, but the approach is different. Now she makes works of art that are a representation of fantasies and stories, a reflection of her thinking, of daydreams and ideas. The sea, our daily life now and a century ago are her sources of inspiration, which she portrays in understandable language, very direct, but with room for her own story. Her material is mainly ceramics that she combines with other materials such as: rope, lead, wood and glass. By using various ceramic techniques, she also faithfully imitates materials (including velvet, ice, wood). What Edith makes are works of art of all sizes, often with fish, but often not. Fish bring a new dimension. They make the images surprising, crazy, playful and accessible. They provide recognition and make the story. The titles given to the works of art express the idea behind the image and therefore form an important part of the total. “Water is infinite. Water is alive”
